23 January 2012
Auctioning a house within the Cecil Hill neighbourhood at Wigram Skies will help raise money for better cancer treatment for South Islanders. The Hornby Rotary Club are hoping to raise more than $200,000 to go towards the cost of an endoscopic ultrasound machine, used to detect the spread of certain types of cancer.
The Canterbury District Health Board has pledged $400,000 towards the cost of the machine, while the money raised from the auction will go towards extra add-ons and also to pay for some staff training.
Hornby Rotary Club projects manager, Robert Paton, told The Press that the club had purchased a section within Wigram Skies using funds from the Club's charitable trust. Ngāi Tahu Property discounted the section and the contractors had offered their services at discounted rates as well.
Building on the section should begin very soon and the house is expected to take four months to complete, he said.
