Oct 2010 - Wigram Skies a solid option post earthquake

Wigram Skies is showing no signs of damage as a result of the September 4 earthquake.  Christchurch surveying and engineering firm Eliot Sinclair & Partners and geotechnical experts Tonkin & Taylor have undertaken a detailed assessment of the site and have confirmed that the 286 sites within Stage One of the development are safe for building.  For further information or to obtain a copy of the engineers report please contact our sales manager Dene Maddren on 0800 944 726 or 021 622 749.

Tony Sewell, Chief Executive of Ngāi Tahu Property says, “A visual engineer’s analysis of the whole of the Wigram site has shown the area to have performed well through the earthquake. Rigorous testing and analysis has confirmed that the 286 sites within Stage One of the development (already under construction) are safe for building.”

Mr Sewell says engineers will now continue the testing regime across the remainder of the site to further their knowledge of the underlying ground conditions.

Environment Canterbury’s Christchurch Liquefaction Study already shows that Wigram is outside of liquefaction risk areas but to be extra sure, Ngāi Tahu Property has engaged Christchurch surveying and engineering firm Eliot Sinclair & Partners and geotechnical experts Tonkin & Taylor to undertake a detailed assessment.

In respect of Stage 1 of the development, Eliot Sinclair’s report summary says: “We did not observe any evidence of ground deformation, cracking or sand boils across the site, and pipe and manhole structures constructed as part of subdivision construction were not damaged.

“We did not observe any evidence of liquefaction, lateral spreading, or ground settlement that would likely cause damage to future buildings at the subdivision site.”

Tony Sewell says, “In the current environment, post the September 4 quake, we believe it is vital to provide prospective buyers with assurance that every aspect of the Wigram Skies development has been thoroughly checked out.

“I have no doubt that in the future most potential home builders and buyers will be demanding more detailed engineering reports and guarantees around ground stability and the potential for liquefaction in the event of another earthquake. Having already completed that exercise for Stage One of Wigram Skies, we can move forward with confidence knowing that we can provide that reassurance.”

The first 62 sections within Stage One are currently on the market and attracting good interest with close to 50% already sold. These sections are within the Cecil Hill neighbourhood – named after a pioneering aviator and flying instructor.

When complete this master-planned community will be home to around 4,000 people and will provide a town centre, recreational facilities, parks and employment opportunities. The area will also be home to Wigram heritage sites that will include the former Control Tower and Hangers 4 and 5. The Kingsford-Smith landing site will be another carefully honoured and preserved area.
